ESR introduction and

outline ESR Project 7

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1995. From 2013 to 2018 she performed her studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University of Havana. As an undergraduate internship, in 2014 she was involved in the laboratory of Dengue Vaccine in the Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), for the development of a Dengue Vaccine using molecular biology tools.

From 2015 to middle of 2019 she was a member of the Scientific Group of Thermodynamic of Complex Systems, from the Department of Chemical-Physics, Chemistry Faculty, University of Havana. In this environment she achieved her Thesis Degree: “Thermodynamic analysis of the influence of the extracellular glucose concentration on the robustness of cancer glycolysis”, under the supervision of the Prof. José Manuel Nieto Villar.

As a graduate, Ileana performed an internship at the laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology of the National Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Cuba. During this time, she completed a Diploma in Clinical Trials at the Institute of Pharmacy and Food, University of Havana.

Since December 2019, she is carrying out her PhD research at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Technical University of Munich, in the context of the H2020 TRAIN-HEART project. The aims of the research project are to elucidate the role of miR21 in myofibroblasts and its targetome. Furthermore, she will be working in the development of an antimiR-21-based therapy targeting myofibroblasts, as it has been shown that miR-21 is one of the most upregulated microRNAs in heart failure.
