ESR introduction and

outline ESR Project 4

Deepak hails from the southern city of Chennai, India. He completed his master’s degree in Biotechnology from SRM University, Kattankulathur, INDIA, and his project thesis was in the field of Ocular Genetics from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai under the guidance of Dr. Soumittra Nagasamy. Deepak then began working with the umbilical cord tissue processing unit of Lifecell International in Chennai for brief period, before moving to work with the National Cancer Tissue Biobank at the Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. During his near three-year tenure at IIT-M, Deepak worked on multiple, large-scale next-generation sequencing projects, aimed at understanding the mutational landscape of cancers, particularly breast, gastro-intestinal and oral cancers in Indian cohorts. He was also involved in the collection and cryopreservation of tissue and other body fluid samples like blood, saliva and cerebrospinal fluid from various collaborating medical centres. This stint greatly helped develop a keen interest in strategies for the treatment and management of complex diseases.

This led him to the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, where he worked under Prof. Milana Frenkel-Morgenstern for nearly a year, studying the effects of chimeric RNAs on various disorders. Since December 2019, he has been working in the research group of Prof. Dr. Monika Stoll, at the School for Cardiovascular Diseases (CARIM), which is a part of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of Maastricht University, Netherlands. His project, which is a part of the H2020 TRAIN-HEART consortium funded by MSCA, deals with the creation of a unified targetome database through the integration of GWAS and epigenetic datasets with non-coding RNAs in ischemic heart failure.
